Three indoor shopping centres meet at Church Square, and together with the other main
shopping streets, create a retail experience enriched by the many major stores and high street businesses the town is now attracting.
There are several restaurants in the town centre with an increasingly mixed cuisine on offer. For a real culinary treat, seek out The Griffin Inn, Eccleston, given a 2005 ‘Restaurant of the Year’ award by The St. Helens Reporter.
The George Street Quarter is typical of
an area that leaves a positive impression
on the visitor. Refurbished facades, more
parking, and better security all go to make
the Quarter a smart, fun place to be.
For a vibrant nightlife, the Bridge Street area
houses various bars and pubs, as well as
a major nightclub. Or for something more
cultural, take a trip to the Citadel Arts
Centre on Waterloo Street where the town’s
favourite son, Johnny Vegas, once delighted
local audiences with his beer-swilling husky
tones as the venue’s compère.
St. Helens offers activities ranging from
premier racing at Haydock Park, to highoctane
powerboating, and the annual free
Eclectica Music Festival. As well as rapidly
becoming one of the country’s top jazz
and blues venues, the town has a host of
hidden delights with something for everyone.
